Class 1 learner licence course

A structured programme for people who already hold a New Zealand Class 1 learner licence—connecting classroom learning, workbook activities, supervised theory assessment, and one continuous on-road practical session.

Delivery is led by Dharmendra Singh, sole operational manager for HIWAY TO HARTS LIMITED (trading as Get Driving Instructor and Pisttons Driving School)—facilitator, assessor, and point of contact for authorised review.

What learners can expect

Who it is for: Learners who want teaching—not only test tips—to build hazard perception, lawful habits, and sound decisions in real New Zealand conditions.

What they will learn: Progressive classroom modules from road-safety foundations through risk, behaviour, rules, and integration—building toward supervised theory and on-road practical assessment.

Classroom activities: Facilitated discussion, scenarios, and workbook tasks aligned to the approved instructor script and delivery manual—not passive slides alone.

Theory assessment: After the six facilitated classroom modules, a 2.0 hour supervised closed-book summative theory event.

Practical assessment: A 2.5 hour continuous on-road session assessing twelve practical competencies.

After the course: Supervised practice with a licensed supervisor continues. Completing the course does not guarantee a restricted practical test pass, replace logged practice, or mean NZTA has approved the course for public delivery.

7Teaching modules
20.5 hGDI-designed contact time (not an NZTA-mandated minimum)
12Practical competencies (PC-01–PC-12)

Part 1 of 5

What is the programme?

This course is for people who already hold a New Zealand Class 1 learner licence and want structured teaching—not only test tips—to build safer habits on the path toward a restricted licence.

Many learners can steer and pass manoeuvres but have not yet built hazard perception, lawful habits, and sound decisions across real New Zealand conditions. The programme connects classroom learning to on-road behaviour, then checks competence through supervised theory and one continuous practical session.

After the course, supervised practice with a licensed supervisor continues. Finishing the course does not replace logged practice, does not guarantee a restricted practical test pass, and does not mean NZTA has approved the course for public delivery.

Total contact time: 20.5 hours GDI-designed contact—six facilitated classroom modules, supervised summative theory, and one on-road practical session.

Part 2 of 5

What will learners experience?

Learners move through seven teaching modules plus summative gates—not a loose collection of topics. Each step prepares for the next, from understanding risk to planning supervised practice, then theory and practical summative assessment.

Part 3 of 5

How will teaching and assessment work?

Teaching

Facilitators follow the approved instructor script and delivery manual—segmented classroom pathways with formative checks, scenarios, and workbook alignment. Learners use the learner workbook for activities and reflection between facilitated blocks.

Theory assessment

After MOD-01–06, learners sit a 2.0 hour supervised closed-book theory event. It assesses mapped learning outcomes LO-01, LO-02, LO-03, LO-05, LO-06, and LO-07. LO-04 is demonstrated primarily on the road; LO-08 and LO-09 are emphasised formatively and in integration.

Practical assessment

One continuous on-road session assesses practical competencies PC-01 through PC-12 using provider observation criteria defined in the official submission. Scoring rubrics and controlled instruments are not published on this public site.
